How to choose a cable marker

Picking the right marker comes down to four questions. Work through them in order and the format usually chooses itself.

1. Before or after termination?

If the conductor is not yet terminated, heat-shrink is available — it slides over the open end and shrinks permanently into place. If the cable is already terminated, you need a wrap-around or flag label that applies from the side.

2. What is the environment?

Harsh exposure to oils, fuels, solvents, or a military spec points to heat-shrink polyolefin. A generally durable run is well served by a polyester wrap-around. Fire-safety-critical spaces call for low-smoke, zero-halogen (LSZH) material.

3. Is there an industry or customer specification to meet?

The specification often drives material and standard directly: a MIL spec typically means heat-shrink, while a medical build means controlled-environment manufacturing and the relevant quality system. Confirm the exact standard before you commit.

4. How much space and readability do you need?

Congested racks, the need for a barcode area, or cable that cannot be rotated point to a flag. If the cable can rotate and you want maximum print protection, choose a wrap-around.

Quick comparison

  • Self-laminating wrap-around — protection and long-term durability; outdoor and fixed installs.
  • Flag — visibility, quick reading, and easy replacement; dense racks and fiber.
  • Heat-shrink — permanence and ruggedization; military, aerospace, and harsh environments.
